SUMMARY:IoTSF Smart Buildings Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Smart Buildings & Cybersecurity Workgroup: Managing the risks and benefits of IoT in smart buildings\n \n  \nInvitation: making Smart Buildings safe to connect\nThe history of IT\, Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Operational Technology (OT) shows that security will always be an afterthought unless those who need good security can get their priorities in front of those that design systems. Combining a security mindset with design and innovation is really important\, because the system is better\, and always more cost effective\, when security designed in from the start. \nThe Internet of Things Security Foundation (IoTSF) was established to make it safe to connect in the smart and hyper-connected era of IoT. Right now\, we are witnessing the steady invasion of IoT into buildings and their networks\, and we can see a growing need to support this area for a wide range of stakeholders – from designers\, to integrators\, to operators and users. There are a great many potential risks to buildings and those who own and occupy them\, but that can be actively managed\, cost effectively. \nIoTSF has created a Smart Buildings Working Group and we need your help to make it safe for smart buildings.\nWe invite you to join the mission to make Smart Buildings safe and secure over their lifetime. \nThe goal of the Working Group is to establish a comprehensive set of guidelines to help each of the supply chain participants to specify\, procure\, install\, integrate\, operate and maintain IoT securely in buildings. This includes intelligent buildings equipment and controls such as audio visual (AV)\, fire\, HVAC\, lighting and building security. \nWho should join-in and what do you get?\nThe workgroup will have a broad representation from a number of stakeholder groups\, including: \nEnterprises – owners and occupiers such as banks\, technology companies and organisations with plant facilities with an active interest in the stability of their building control system or data centres. They will help define the security requirements to meet the business risks and describe how smart building systems should integrate into security management. Participants will learn more about the emerging risks\, how to assess and manage them\, as well as what to specify in procurement. \nFacilities Management Companies – as risk owners and providers of services in smart buildings\, facilities managers play a major role in planning\, development and in day to day operations. They will help inform the working group as to how systems need to achieve on-going security goals within the practicalities of a cost effective service\, using available skills. Participants will learn more about the direction of customer needs\, contemporary and emerging risks\, how to assess\, specify and manage systems. \nSystems integrators – help to define standard security solution sets and architectures for IoT in buildings. Integrators are key to making sure that BMS\, IoT and related systems are specified\, configured and installed with security in mind. \nPhysical security\, fire and control systems manufacturers – as key suppliers\, it is critical that security is designed in from the start\, reducing exposure to owners and users to malevolent risk. This stakeholder group will help define security requirements for their product class and also demonstrate their systems are secure within the smart buildings environment. \nIoT security specialists – a broader group contributing wide security experience to the context of smart buildings. \nWhat will the workgroup deliver and what will it do?\nThe priorities and specific deliverables will be determined by the workgroup yet will likely include: \n\nArchitectures\, including secure systems management\, services\, devices and IT connectivity\nA set of best practice guides on how to apply and maintain IoT security for smart buildings\nAwareness material helping to show what good security looks like – examples of requirements statements or a procurement language for secure IoT in buildings\nWorkshops and events\n\nThe work products will be adopted and maintained by the members of the IoTSF\, and be made publically available in accordance with all IoTSF best practice and security advocacy materials. \nBased on a firm foundation\nIoTSF operates a number of working groups which cover both general (‘horizontal’) aspects of IoT security\, as well as sector (‘vertical’) applications. A foundation of this work is the IoT Security Compliance Framework which can be generally applied by tailoring the security objectives for confidentiality\, integrity and availability. \nThis working group will build on top of existing skills and experience within the Foundation and deliver fit for purpose security to those who need it\, in a language they can understand. \nTo address the many challenges\, we need to collaborate – as someone who has an interest in the success of Smart Buildings\, we invite you join the working group. \nHow do you find out more or join-in?\nOur first UK meeting is 17th September 2018 12:30-16:30 at in Earls Court\, London where you can attend to find out more about this working group and how you can get involved. There is no fee to attend this event and spaces are limited. \nThis initiative is facilitated by industry experts Sarb Sembhi and James Willison who are working as Vice Chairs. \nYou or your company do not need to be IoTSF members to attend the workshop at this prioritisation and scope phase. Naturally\, we hope you become members if you share our concerns and have an interest in addressing the issues longer term. \nClick here to register your interest in this workshop\, please state “Smart Buildings Workshop” as the subject and provide your name\, job title and company. \nIf you have any queries\, please email contact@iotsecurityfoundation.org

Many of these devices have no security protocols built in or registered with the IT department. This stream will look at best practices for managing security processes in the Internet of Things\, including estate management\, encryption and authentication. \nPerfect for: Head of Compliance\, Head of Privacy\, Head of Governance\, Chief Technical Architect and Head of IT Security. \nData and Technology session\nTechnology is changing\, and the hackers are using it too. That means it’s essential to understand what it can do\, how it can be used against you\, how it can benefit your security procedures\, and how it will change them. This stream will look at behavioural analysis\, machine learning\, AI\, quantum computing encryption\, and behaviour analytics\, in the context of both hacking and corporate usage. \nPerfect for: CTO\, CISO\,  Head of Data Security\, Head of Cloud\, Head of IT \nMore event info here: https://biztechevents.co.uk/teiss \nRegistration \nIoTSF Members can take advantage of 50% Ticket Discount by checking the Plenary Basecamp message board or emailing contact@iotsecurityfoundation.org

While many of the challenges in IoT security are similar to the challenges of securing information technology (IT) computing environments\, there are special considerations due to the scale\, operating conditions\, system capabilities\, and wide range of device types which are used in IoT solutions. Further\, these systems\, by connecting the electronic and physical worlds\, must address both operations technology (OT) security and information technology (IT) security. \nBiography \nTim Hahn is a IBM Distinguished Engineer and has been with IBM since 1990. He is the Chief Architect for Internet of Things Security within the IBM Watson Internet of Things division. He is responsible for strategy\, architecture\, and design for IBM Watson Internet of Things offerings. These offerings\, coupled with others from across IBM\, enable customers to design\, build\, experiment\, run\, manage\, and operate solutions involving diverse sensor data coming from connected devices. These solutions leverage IBM’s strengths in cloud\, cognitive\, analytics\, mobile\, social\, and security. \nClose×Pamela Gupta\, IoTSF/OutSecure Inc.\n“Risk Assessment for IoT” \nWill traditional Information security risk assessment methods serves us for the rise in complexity\, pervasiveness\, and automation of technology systems increases and cyberspace matures\, particularly with the Internet of Things (IoT)?  There is a strong argument that we will need new approaches to assess risk and build trust. The challenge with simply extending existing assessment methodologies to IoT systems is that we could be blind to new risks arising in such ecosystems. These risks could be related to the high degrees of connectivity present or the coupling of digital\, cyber-physical\, and social systems. Session will focus on  new methodologies to assess risk in this context that consider the dynamics and uniqueness of the IoT while maintaining the rigor of best practice in risk assessment. \nBiography \nPamela Gupta is President of OutSecure – creating strategy to reduce risk for existing and emerging technology. OutSecure is a security consulting company that is called for validation of risk mitigation measures in place by large global organizations. \nClose×Ken Munro\, Pen Test Partners\n“Smart Buildings\, Dumb Security?” \nAs building control and management systems find their way into more and more of the built environment we need a wake-up call regarding their security. Over the last 10 or so years Ken has been researching building management devices\, and found that the security failings that existed in 2006 still haven’t been properly addressed. In this talk you’ll find out about the issues\, including how devices can be compromised by attackers\, and also the scale of the problem. His research has discovered them connected directly to the public internet\, from fire stations\, military bases\, schools\, government buildings\, businesses and large retailers among many. With live demonstrations you’ll see how hackers can take control\, what the impacts are\, and what can be done about it. \nBiography \nKen is a regular speaker at many events\, DEF CON and Black Hat included. He’s also an Executive Member of the Internet of Things Security Forum and spoke out on IoT security design flaws at the forum’s inaugural event. He’s also not averse to getting deeply techie either\, regularly participating in hacking challenges and demos at Black Hat\, 44CON\, DefCon and Bsides amongst others. \nKen and his team at Pen Test Partners have hacked everything from keyless cars and a range of IoT devices\, from wearable tech to children’s toys and smart home control systems. This has gained him notoriety among the national press\, leading to regular appearances on BBC TV and BBC News online as well as the broadsheet press. He’s also a regular contributor to industry magazines\, penning articles for the legal\, security\, insurance\, oil and gas\, and manufacturing press. \nClose×Albert Sisto\, Device Authority\n“Security in IoT” \nInsight into some real use case examples and how IoT applications\, device manufacturers\, and IoT Ecosystem providers are considering the use of Device Authority to secure their product or service. \nExamples will include :- \n\nMedical Device use case examples – portable device and large-scale robots.\nIoT Application service provider example – focused on device management\nGateway providers.\nEcosystem partnerships – leveraging Enterprise security technologies and deployments and making them IoT ready.\n\nBiography \nAl is a Director of Tern Plc an AIM listed investment company where he serves as an investor and business advisor to private companies including Device Authority. He is also a General Partner of Sixth Bridge L. P.\, an investment and strategic advisory firm and currently serves as an advisor and on the boards of several leading Enterprise Software and Security companies in Europe and the USA\, including Agnitio\, iJento and Nok Nok Labs. He also serves as an advisor to Centaur Partners\, a leading\, boutique technology investment banking firm. \nAl was formally Chairman and CEO of Hifn (NASDAQ: HIFN). He repositioned the company through acquisitions and repurposing technology leading to its merger with EXAR. Prior to Hifn\, he had a seven-year tenure as Chairman\, President and CEO of Phoenix Technologies (NASDAQ: PTEC)\, a provider of platform-enabling software. As COO of RSA Data Security he focused on strategy\, operations and strategic investments to expand the security ecosystem. \nClose×Ron Winward\, Radware\n“The Battle Among IoT-Based Bots” \n2017 may already be defined as the year of IoT threats. Spawned from last year’s Mirai botnet\, the IoT threat landscape has become so vast that vigilante hackers are now purposefully destroying vulnerable devices just to combat the threat. In this session\, Ron Winward will review the Mirai framework and specifically how it has created this new threat landscape. Also\, he’ll discuss other infamous malware attacks such as the Hajime botnet and BrickerBot\, and how darknet forums and marketplaces are fueling the threat. Finally\, Winward will explore how to protect yourself from IoT-based attacks and ways to secure your own IoT infrastructure. \nClose×Louis Parks\, SecureRF\n“Future-Proof Security for the Smallest IoT Devices” \nCost\, performance\, and efficiency are driving a record number of 8-bit and 16-bit devices into the IoT creating a significant security challenge. Symmetric methods can address basic data needs but they do not scale for global solutions\, and asymmetric methods only become practical on larger 32-bit processors. With more and more small processors entering foundational platforms like the smart grid\, medical devices\, and automobiles\, many with market lives of ten years or more\, the issue of quantum-resistance security becomes an additional critical consideration. We will review the security options and typical implementation needs for gateways and endpoint devices including sensors\, actuators\, and embedded processors. This talk will include examples of ultra-low-resource protocols\, and provide current benchmarks for ARM\, RISC-V\, and other processor environments against existing commercial solutions. \nClose
