In April 2018, Professor Paul Dorey (past chair IoTSF) invited James to work with Sarb Sembhi as vice-chair of the Smart Built Environment Working Group.

It published a white paper in 2019 and James worked with the group, during the pandemic and beyond, to produce the IoTSF’s best practice guide, ‘IoT Cybersecurity for Facilities Professionals in the Smart Built Environment’, published in 2023.

In March 2022, James joined the staff of the IoTSF as project and engagement manager. He has worked on two Innovate UK, UKRI funded projects, ManySecured and Secure Networking by Design.

James has represented the IoTSF at many of the project meetings and events including Cyber UK 2023. He actively participated in the roundtable discussions with key leaders from the Digital Security by Design community at the All Hands Days which ran every six months from April 2022.

James has written many blogs, spoken at leading security events such as IFSEC International and featured in several webinars and podcasts to promote the work of the IoT Security Foundation and how it impacts the security industry as a whole.

He is a prolific LinkedIn contributor with over 40 videos in 2024 and over 50,000 views. Notably this year, his post about the April IoTSF Newsletter was viewed over 3,500 times.

James is sadly leaving our staff at the end of December as the projects come to an end. He’s greatly enjoyed working with such a dynamic team who, together, have achieved so much.

He stays on as a dedicated volunteer and co-chair with his good friend, Sarb Sembhi, of the Smart Built Environment working group.

James works as a specialist in the field of Security Convergence which is now advocated by the NCSC and the NPSA. To find out more, go to https://www.unifiedsecurity.net
